What is EPS?

EPS is a light polymer.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a light polymer. It is a foamed plastic which is added with a foaming agent by using a polystyrene resin and softened at the same time to generate a gas to form a hard closed cell structure.


Widely used in construction, insulation, packaging, refrigeration, daily necessities, industrial casting and other fields. It can also be used to display the production of venues, merchandise cabinets, advertising signs and toys. At present, in order to meet the national building energy-saving requirements, it is mainly applied to external wall insulation, external wall insulation and floor heating.


Application principle:

1. Laying EPS insulation layer to prevent roadbed frost damage

The construction of roads in permafrost regions will cause local environmental changes, leading to the melting of permafrost, causing serious diseases and even damage to the roads. Traditional methods of remediation and freezing damage, such as padding, salt injection, soil replacement, and slag slag, are not satisfactory.


Because the inner wall bubbles in the EPS material are closed, they are not connected to each other, the water absorption rate is small, and the frost resistance is good, which ensures good thermal insulation performance under water immersion conditions.


The EPS board insulation subgrade test (1990) of the Kunlun Mountains in the Qinghai-Tibet Highway shows that the 6cm thick EPS insulation layer can reduce the heat flow from the surface to the deep layer, reduce the downward movement of the upper permafrost layer, and slow down the permafrost. The freezing and thawing of the soil layer keeps the structure of the line stable and reduces deformation.


The research results have been promoted and applied in the roads such as the Chuma River approach road, the Hongliang River Bridge Qiaotou approach road and the old hot spring area. From the current situation of the project, the road surface is solid and flat, the roadbed is stable, and the overall strength of the roadbed and pavement meets the design requirements.

2. Reduce the settlement of the roadbed, prevent or treat the roadbed instability

The embankment is built on the soft soil foundation. Because of the high density of ordinary packing, the additional stress on the foundation caused by its own weight is large, which often causes excessive uneven settlement and settlement of the subgrade.


Due to the small density of EPS and ultra-lightweight characteristics, after a certain depth of replacement, the weight of the embankment can be effectively reduced, the additional stress of the foundation can be reduced, the settlement of the embankment on the soft soil ground can be reduced, and the stability of the foundation can be improved.


Filling a 10m high EPS embankment is equivalent to a low-filled embankment load of 10cm high, and the embankment load is greatly reduced. Therefore, the construction of the EPS embankment in the slope section can effectively prevent the occurrence of landslides and improve the anti-sliding stability of the high embankment.


EPS construction does not require special machinery, manpower can be constructed, and the speed is fast. It is suitable for rescue and disaster relief. It is more suitable for places where large machinery is difficult to use. It can be processed and cut on site to meet the terrain requirements of the site.


The K42+650~K42+800 section of the first phase of the Taizhou section of the Yongtaiwen Expressway was built in August 1998 due to the rapid filling of the soft soil roadbed, causing the roadbed to collapse and the ground arch 60cm.


Due to the extremely urgent construction period, the site was restricted by the 104 national highway and the outer factory. The EPS was finally used to fill the embankment. The thickest part was 6 stories, and the thinnest part was filled in 1 floor. The total amount was 7295m3, which was filled in October of the same year. The building is completed. Since the road section was completed and opened to traffic at the end of 1998, the asphalt concrete pavement has been leveled and in good condition.
